Congregational Affiliation

The UULM encourages our California congregations to become affiliated with the UU Legislative Ministry. What does that entail?

Covenant of Collaboration

"Our congregation wishes to collaborate with the UU Legislative Ministry, CA. We will join with the network of California UUs who are living out our faith by educating, organizing, and advocating for public policies that:

  • uphold the worth and dignity of every person
  • further justice, equity, and compassion in human relations
  • ensure use of the democratic process
  • protect religious freedom, and
  • promote respect for the interdependent web of all existence "

Provide input to UULM

Provide input from your congregation to UULM between the months of April and November in even-numbered years (2004, 2006, 2008) to help guide the selection of UULM's issue priorities. We highly recommend using a "Listening Campaign" model of one-on-one interviews with the leaders and/or members of your congregation. (Note: we can consult with your congregation to help you implement a Listening Campaign.) Encourage members of your congregation to fill out the Issues Survey.

What kind of input is the California UU Legislative Ministry seeking?

  • What is the focus of your congregation's current social justice ministries?
  • What issues are most important to you and why?
  • What social and economic justice issues should California UUs work on together?
  • What leadership and community resources are a part of your congregation?

Develop a congregational UULM Organizing Team

Develop leaders and engage in local efforts to educate the general public and organize action to help advance at least one of the UULM statewide priorities.

Communicate

  • Worship: Hold an annual Sunday for the UU Legislative Ministry -- either by inviting a guest minister or lay leader from UULM, or by including UULM content in your own minister's worship service
  • Newsletter: Run occasional UU Legislative Ministry "News Clips" in your newsletter and, if appropriate, in your email communication with congregants (we can work with you with regard to size restrictions, or give you material to include in a regular column from your minister or social justice committee)
  • Web site: Put the UULM web site as a link on your web site
  • Directory: Include the UULM Contact Information - address, web site, and phone numbers in your church directory

Promote Individual Membership

  • Permit the UULM to send one direct mail piece to the members and friends of your congregation which introduces the UULM to them
  • Put a copy of our brochure and introductory letter in your newcomer packets, or wherever else is appropriate to reach newcomers in your congregation

Collaborate

  • Participate (when geographically feasible) in a UULM Regional Organizing Team
  • Participate in one or more UULM education and advocacy campaigns each year
  • Encourage members of your congregation to participate in the annual Interfaith Legislative Issues Briefing Day in Sacramento (usually in March)
  • Encourage respected congregational leaders to participate in UULM training opportunities at District Assemblies, and cluster events
  • Look for opportunities to collaborate with neighboring UU congregations in social justice work

Share Your Gifts

Send UULM material for possible inclusion on our web site and in our quarterly newsletter: worship materials on social justice themes, stories of inspiring people in your congregation, examples of effective advocacy and social justice work to news@uulmca.org.

  • Promote attendance at an annual local UULM fundraising event, especially among those with the capacity to give
  • Take an annual collection on behalf UULM
