Climate Change and CA Water:
A Young Adult Road Trip for Justice

Water Justice Tour flyerAugust 2-10, 20008
For UUs 18 - 25 years old

Sponsored by the UU Legislative Ministry & Pacific Southwest District

Flyer: [page 1] [page 2]

How will climate change affect our water supply? Where and why is northern CAs water pumped south? Who does water belong to? What’s an aquifer and why should we care? Who do dams benefit and who do they harm? Who will pay the tab? What is paper water? How can we stop the delta from collapsing? What can we do to live in harmony with the interdependent web of life and assure access to safe affordable water for basic human needs? What is water justice?

Join us for an amazing UU road trip in northern and central California to learn about water justice and climate change in California. From the base of Mt. Shasta at the headwaters of the Sacramento River to Tulare where rural communities have no access to safe drinking water, we will learn from local activists, experts, and one another.

We will also worship, play, share music, build community, and enjoy the cool water of California’s wonderful rivers (including a day of river rafting on the American). We will bring our voices, concerns, questions and experiences to our legislators and learn how to take action back in our own communities.

Cost: $460 per person - (if your congregation sponsors you with a donation of $75 toward your trip, UULM will contribute an additional $75, reducing your fee to $310). . College students may be able to receive course credit. The fee covers transportation, lodging, meals, program, insurance, and a professionally guided day of river rafting on the American River. Lodging includes hotels, UU home hospitality, and sleeping on mats under the stars.

Transportation will be in two 15-passenger vans. Tera Little will drive one van from Los Angeles to Sacramento on Friday afternoon, August 1 and we will provide home hospitality over night. Participants from Southern California who need a ride are welcome to come along, or you can fly or drive separately and meet us in Sacramento by 10 a.m. Saturday, August 2.

The trip finishes at noon on Sunday, August 10 after the worship service and closing at the UU Church of Fresno. One van will drive back to Los Angeles, and another will drive back to Sacramento. Participants are welcome to ride back home in one of the vans.

Trip is limited to 24 participants and 6 staff. Contributions toward the UULM matching scholarship program are gratefully received and are tax deductible– UULM, 717 K St. #514, Sacramento, CA 95814.
